5th MAY by Marco Scilipoti - 14/05/09

This has never been a good day in my life!

Every year when this day arrives I look at the calendar… 5th May… Napoleon died on this day. Alessandro Manzoni wrote a poem which every Italian has to learn when they reach the age of 10-15 years old. I still have nightmares about my teacher calling me in front of the class for my presentation and…, as with every Italian, I only remembered the first couple of lines and that’s it! Also 5th May!

Marco Scilipoti & Oscar GallettoAnyway this 5th May 2009 I had an appointment with a very good friend of mine, Oscar Galletto, to finally have a nice rebreather dive together.

We had already tried two days previously but had to cancel the dive because friends of his and my Mum were arriving from Italy, of course his friends in the morning and Mum in the afternoon!

The following day we decided to try again. My Jeep was loaded with all the equipment and ourselves and we had set off only for it to break down en route!

So the next day, 5th May, what can happen I ask myself? Things can only get better, as the saying goes …

The weather was not that good in the morning but as soon we reached Makadi Bay we met Carlo, the owner of I-dive, who is an expert at putting all his divers in a good mood and is always ready to offer detailed information concerning the marine life of the bay.

We also managed a quick “espresso” before preparing! Looking good!

IANTD EGYPT PAYS A VISIT TO ITS SINAI MEMBERS by Matteo Minellono - 04/04/2009

My trip to Dahab as the IANTD Training Manager was a very positive one.

Mohamed Abd El-Latif AliFirst of all, I have to thank Mohamed Abd El-Latif Ali, IANTD Trainer from Dahab Tec Divers (www.dahabtecdivers.com) for his hospitality and kindness to show me around many places I had to visit, both in Sharm and Dahab. Without his help, I would still be wandering around! After many difficulties and many delays trying to get on the ferryboat toward the other side of the Red Sea (in which the ferryboat was unfortunately always involved!). Finally, I touched the land of Sharm on 6th April. I took the rest of the day to organise myself at the Hotel and plan the trip to Dahab for the next day. I had the time then to take a look around Naama Bay, eat some good food and finally rest to be ready for the next day.

LIGHT UP YOUR DIVE!   by Matteo Minellono - 12/05/09

GRALmarine LEDTek diving with a lamp today is becoming a standard almost everywhere. I say “almost” because people might think that you only need a lamp in dark water or during a night dive but actually this is not a very accurate opinion.

In the Red Sea we can dive deep without any major change in water temperature, during summer seasons, from the surface to the bottom (thermo cline of max 1-2°). We are also able to see at 100mt like we were at 30mt. I would say it is the easiest place to make technical diving, so why is a torch still needed? There are many reasons: from famous wrecks around here, overhead environments and many other places where a lamp could be very useful, not forgetting that if we want to see the real colours of the marine life at depth, we definitely need one.
